There are levels..
Sirius and Snape / Harry and Malfoy (enemies)
James and Remus/ Harry-Hermoine-Ron (friends)
Fred and George/ James and Sirius (people whose names are taken together in a single breath)
So is your relationship with people. If everyone at Indihood is a friend, Deepthi came as a friend I never felt the need to have filters with!
I am not saying we are like Fred and George, nor do I keep such high hopes -:p! But we are definitely Harry and Ron. I probably shouldn’t write such stuff because it gets jinxed. So here goes my Brahmastra (*touchwood*)
To be honest, it is more of her personality than mine, to befriend people and have tricky and difficult conversations with ease. To work her way through complexity and sort it out.
I don't remember how exactly we started talking!
Maybe it was Chitragupta! He had written it in our destinies! Although he didn't write his destiny well -:p! And even after our khoon paseene ke efforts, he has not yet seen the light of prod!
In those days, talking about how confusing our system was, was our favourite topic. How difficult it was to make our edits go through! How hopeless our app felt compared to the apps in the market!
Usually, after work hours I chuck my phone and laptop. (Given my profession and the 21st century, I strongly dislike screens for their intrusion in my otherwise happening life!). But with her, I could bear with my phone and laptop sometimes even after work. Most unlike me, I was sometimes even ready to put in a few extra hours or help her with something because she did the same for me.
There is a different kind of bond that you make with people who are navigating an ocean full of sharks and storms in the same boat with you. (School and college friends for instance)
She would ping me now and then to ask about what I was working on! How I was doing it! And tell me what she was working on and everything! I liked her proactive approach! After college, I had not seen people interested in someone else’s work! It was in college we were interested in what everyone else was learning and building, but in the office, naah! Apna kaam ho jaaye had long since become good enough!
Eventually, as our edits started going through and we got used to the tantrums of our system a bit, we started creating quirky stuff for ourselves to keep the mood going!
Once we decided to talk to each other in different languages. She is Tulu and me in French. Just to see if we could learn a language while talking (a failed experiment, that will be continued when we meet each other! -:D)
We make plans of learning new skills every now and then. They start on a high and then eventually die.
We even made plans of staying together when the office reopens. Which is again yet to materialise.
A year down the line, now we talk about how we can contribute to the things we don't find great in our system, learn new stuff together, especially tech stuff.
We even talk about people at the office like aunties to shake the boredom off! -:D. We talk about how we can be as techy and cool as the engineering folks– especially the ones we have worked with like Abhishek, Abhijeet and Satish, how we can have our way with words like Zareer, how we can know our system like Ashwin, how we can be know-it-alls and as approachable as MTR and Anand, as dabang as Sanila, Sahana and Hema…. And how lost we used to be once upon a time like our freshers.
But our all time favourite is us-- How inconsistent and lazy and lost we are! But how we are going to transform into doyens in all fields in the next month -:D (The plan is revised every month)
Deepthi is my fellow Solutions Engineer at Indihood, known for her organisation and documentation, her thorough work, her expertise on giving shape to unclear, undefined and experimental pieces and her ability to bring up important and hard-to-talk-about stuff. What I like most about her is that she is my friend :D
Indihood has given me many friends and even more people I look up to and admire. Even though I belong to a generation where online friendship became a thing, I didn’t for once believe that I could make a friend with whom I would be as comfortable as I am with school friends.
I will always be thankful for everyone I met here (It has just increased my belief in the goodness of people). But a little more than that, I will be thankful for an unexpected friend. These ones are the extra special gifts!
